Our idea of careers is messed up.
A lot of us, Younger Me included, once thought of a career as a salaried post in a fancy multinational corporation.
Why would our “mental health” & “personal life” even matter?
But those things DO matter.
We can’t ignore them!
Here are 3 reasons why:
1️⃣ We spend more than ½ our lives on our careers
We spend a significant amount of time at work.
Assuming we work 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, 11 months/year, for the next 35 years, that’s 61,600 hours.
Or 2,567 days!
And that’s not including any travel or overtime work involved!
Given how much of our life is spent at work, it’s thereafter vital that we find a career that’s perfect for us.
This isn’t a “nice to have.”
It’s a “NEED to have”.
2️⃣ Our careers bring in more than just money
Yes, money does make the world go round.
Who doesn’t want a fancy house, large garden & private jets?
But those things come with MAJOR sacrifices (or wealthy family members)
You need to consider where your true priorities lie.
Is it just the money & prestige? Or something more.

3️⃣ A career can go beyond a company
2023 careers are no longer confined to 1 company or even 1 particular type of job!
We are multi-dimensional, multihyphenate.
Almost everyone has a #sidehustle, #sideproject (and if you don’t already have one… it might be time to start one!)
It’s ok to be a professional software engineer with a love of baking. You can apply your Type 1, perfectionist tendency to calculate everything to 2 decimal points and include those in your own recipes.
I guarantee you, there will be a group of people out there who will love you for it!
And that side project could change your life. (It did for me!)
At the very least, it’ll enrich your life. 😉
