How do you land a 20% salary bump?
There’s only one way.
Through salary negotiations.
It’s intimidating, even for seasoned executives, but there are ways to get a dream offer to go alongside your dream job.
1️⃣ Mindset
Instead of thinking:
❌ I’m lucky to even get a job offer; I should just accept whatever they offer!
❌ I don’t have much prior experience. They’re already taking such a big chance on me, so I should be grateful and not push anymore!
Think this:
✅ They’re expecting me to negotiate. I’d be stupid to leave money on the table.
✅ I deserve to be here. Them giving me an offer already shows that I have what it takes!
✅ What's the worst that can happen, they say no? Well then, I’d just accept the offer anyway. Even if 99% of the time they might say no, maybe I’m the lucky 1% where they say yes to. If I don’t try to negotiate, then it’s a 0% chance they will say yes.
2️⃣ Know your numbers
✅ Do your market research and understand what the average compensation for your role is - e.g. via Glassdoor, peers and competing offers
✅ Know the minimum number that you’re willing to settle for and your ideal number
Research has shown that if you settle for a specific number (rather than a round number), they’re more likely to agree.
So settle for $115,500 instead of $120,000!
It shows that you’re really trying your best to make it work within their budget.
3️⃣ Evaluate the offer in its entirety
Compensation is so much more than just the salary.
It can also include the bonus structure, stock/equity, performance-linked rewards and commission.
You’ll also need to consider other elements like opportunities for growth, promotion timelines, travel opportunities, work/life balance and increments.
Even if they say no to a salary increment, you can negotiate on other things e.g.:
🤔 Signing bonus
🤔 Title
🤔 Start date
🤔 Flexible work arrangement
🤔 Health & wellness budget
🤔 Learning & development budget etc.
