Don't know what you're doing at work?
I've switched careers 2 times. Steal my 3 tips for beating imposter syndrome:
“Who am I to think I can do a job in an industry I have absolutely no experience in?!”
Imposter syndrome is so real.
Especially when you are considering switching industries.
I felt like the biggest imposter when I was applying to jobs in a brand new industry.
Here are 3 secrets I used to handle my own personal insecurities when I was looking to leave finance.
(1) Identify what skills you bring to the table, and how you can apply them to your new job.
- This is the perfect time to lean into your strengths and play them up
- Advocate for the skills you’ve acquired across different industries
- This is what will make you stand out from your competition.
(2) Know that diversity in thought is crucial to a team’s success.
- While you may not have relevant experience, don’t discount the value you bring in approaching the problem with a fresh set of eyes.
(3) Be humble, open-minded and learn, learn, learn.
- In the words of Bill Nye, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.”
- So get reading.
- Listen to that podcast while you’re getting ready for your day.
- Reach out to that intimidatingly smart and interesting person on LinkedIn.
- Be relentless in your pursuit of knowledge.
- No matter the industry you’re in, there are only upsides to cultivating curiosity.
