Unpopular opinion: Your personality and soft skills are what’s going to land you the job

Here’s how:

In a standard resume, personality is the missing ingredient.

We see the skills and accomplishments:
- Your jobs, experiences, and technical skills

Now take the “anti-resume.”

It was a project released by UPenn in 2019.

The anti-resume is the opposite of a traditional resume

Instead of wins, these would be your highlights:

Your:
- failures (big and small)
- failed goals
- regrets
- achievements that wouldn’t usually be considered celebration-worthy

Basically every quality that makes you human that would never show up on your actual resume.

I love the idea of the anti-resume.

It normalizes failure and gives us a glimpse into the person behind the paper.

I’m not saying ditch your resume and only have an anti resume

I’m saying - try to bring some of that personality to the table in the job application process

At the end of the day, people want to hire people they want to work with

Hard skills can always be taught

But values, work ethic, personality? These are hard to teach and to change

Coming from someone who’s been on both sides of the interviewing table

I got hired many times for my soft skills and personality fit.

And I also took chances to hire people who didn’t have the ‘experience’ – but had the hunger to learn and a passion for the role.

Don’t discount yourself just because you don’t have the required technical skills.

Your personality and soft skills count much more than you’d think.
