Tough bosses are everywhere.

Those LinkedIn posts make you look at the world through rose-tinted glasses.

Personally, I was blessed to work with good bosses.

They were leaders who cared about my well-being and pushed me enough to achieve greater heights

But I know that I don’t represent the majority.

After working with multiple clients as a career coach, I know that difficult bosses are aplenty.

One common challenge that people tell me about is how they are tired of dealing with a boss who keeps changing the scope of work

If you’re struggling with this too, here are 3 tips to help you out -

1️⃣  Clear the air, set expectations, & align on the deliverables

Set up a meeting with your boss to share some of your frustrations and come with a suggested plan of action.

Here’s a potential script that can help -

“I understand that the project requirements may evolve and I’m willing to adapt to new challenges. However, the frequent changes in deliverables have made it increasingly difficult for me to perform my duties efficiently.

I am fully committed to delivering high-quality work, so I’m raising this because I want to be able to contribute more effectively.

To do so, I believe that having a more stable understanding of the project’s scope and deliverables would help improve my efficiency and output. I am open to any suggestions or clarifications that you might have and would love to work together to find a solution that benefits the team and the project.”

After the meeting, type up an email to recap the deliverables and timeline discussed and send it back to your boss

This way you have a clear record of what’s been agreed upon that you can refer back to in the future

2️⃣ It’s a two-way conversation - be proactive ⚡️

Maybe your boss wasn’t the best at explaining things.

But it’s also on you to ask follow-up questions if you’re not sure about anything.

Be specific on what the final deliverables and expectations are before you act on them.

3️⃣ Check in to make sure you’re on the right track 🎯

Don’t just take the project your boss assigns you and NOT check in at all until everything is done.

It may seem logical until you work in a fast-changing environment where things change a lot.

Check in from time to time to make sure you’re on track.

Of course, be reasonable about the frequency of your check-ins too.

I hope this helps - if you have any more tips, I’d love to hear from you!
