My failures have helped me find success.

One particular failure that I faced at BlackRock helped me in a big way: Starting a fashion blog.

Back then, I felt stuck and uninspired at work.

I was living the “high” 6-figure-salary life, but I could sense that this was not the right fit for me.

So I started a fashion blog.

The idea behind the blog was this: I had noticed that fashion blogs were not geared towards corporate usage. Women, in particular, had very little fashion inspo to lean on beyond the standard black/white attire.

Which I loathed!

So I started a blog with blogspot.

From corporate wear, I expanded to posts on how I was cooking in a speedy, healthy way.

It almost became a public diary of my life outside of BlackRock.

And on one hand, it “saved” me mentally: I finally had a creative outlet to channel my energies to!

But on the other hand, the blog was a total flop.

No one ever saw it.

No one cared.

And I certainly didn’t receive any invitations to fashion runways!

But the blog was critical for my post-BlackRock career move, when I applied to work at a Singapore-based fashion startup.

If not for my blog, I would have always been pegged as the “finance girl”

And wouldn’t have a portfolio to display my “lifelong love of fashion” and showcase relevant experience.

Because guess what, it’s important to back your words up with action.

And my blog was the biggest physical evidence of that “love!”

It was also a great way for me to test drive my dream job - to see if it was actually something I’d actually want to build a career in.

So if you’d like help test driving your dream job or building a portfolio to successfully pivot into it, feel free to DM me TEST DRIVE. I’m ready to help!
