The job market is changing at an incredibly fast pace.
Stable jobs aren’t so stable.
Bonuses aren’t what they used to look like.
Iron rice bowls aren’t so indestructible anymore.
Whether it’s AI, the economic downturn, or the new normal of WFH left over from COVID days, work is taking on a new form.
If career success and satisfaction are what you’re going for, it’s not enough to rely on what you know.
Here are 3 tips to stay relevant in an ever-changing job market.
1️⃣ Figure out your career values and recognize it’s not binary
When I was in BlackRock, I saw careers as black and white.
It’s either:
Passion or pay.
Flexibility or prestige.
But I realised that careers are soooo much more flexible and dynamic than that.
And many career paths can offer both and more.
I just had to keep an open mind.
2️⃣ Leverage your soft skills
I used to think that hard skills were prime - these included financial modelling, coding etc.
But while they’re important, they’re NOT what you want to rely on in an ever-changing market.
Hard skills can be easily taught.
The real game-changer lies in the soft skills and values you develop (e.g.: integrity, communicating with clarity, responsibility, motivation, passion etc.).
Want that promotion and pay bump?
It lies in your soft skills.
3️⃣ Adopt a growth mindset
Stop blaming everything around you - the economy, AI, etc. Change is inevitable.
Instead, take control of what you can control - your mindset.
No matter what the state of the economy is, there are always methods to maximise your potential.
If AI is taking over, figure out how AI can help you at work.
Share your findings generously with your colleagues - you could even do a short lunch presentation to bring people up to speed!
Who knows, you might just build a reputation for yourself within the company and carve a niche that’s perfect for you.
If you’re in a sunset industry, what are the transferable skills you can work on?
There are so many ways to get out of a rut.
Don’t put yourself in one.
