Let me tell you the worst thing about earning 6-figures in your early 20s.
You might have heard the term too.
👉🏻 The Golden Handcuffs
The thing about golden handcuffs is this:
You’re 100% aware of them;
You voluntarily put them on; and
They’re almost impossible to take off.
The main reason is this: Fear.
Fear of the unknown;
Fear that people will discover your incompetence aka imposter syndrome; and
Fear that you have no value in the “outside” world.
There are many stories of people who’ve broken free of those same handcuffs.
The “brave” ones.
But can I tell you a secret?
That bravery doesn’t come overnight.
Personally, I needed 7 years to find the “courage” to leave BlackRock.
But once I’d left, quitting my next role at a fashion startup was easier because I had learned that:
👉🏻 The world didn’t end
BlackRock was my entire world until it wasn’t.
And my world still kept spinning.
👉🏻 Passion makes all the difference
I used to dread getting up for work.
Now, I feel inspired, energised and more motivated than ever before.
That positive well of emotion pushes me to work even harder and get better at my craft.
Which is something that people around me can sense, and draw closer to!
👉🏻 Lucrative world outside
The initial days after BlackRock were bleak.
I took a terrifying 50%+ pay cut and questioned my life choices.
Then I started expanding on my skill sets.
Became an entrepreneur and understood the power of shedding those golden cuffs: I no longer had a ceiling above me!
I wasn’t limited in the kind of work I wanted to do, the clients I could attract and my earning power.
In fact, I could do even better than I was at BlackRock!
But it all started with taking that first step.
