Is it just me... Or do we Asians tend to have a victim mindset?

A lot of us are miserable at work & we often say that it’s because “our parents told us to do this”.

“This” being the Holy Trinity of becoming either a doctor, lawyer or engineer.

But here’s the harsh truth: We are responsible for our own lives and careers.

We might not have known much when we were 17 and tasked with picking a career “for life”, but it doesn’t have to be that way forever.

It’s time we stopped blaming, justifying and falling into the trap of sunk cost fallacy

And started taking action.

Just because you studied law and have spent 10 years doing law, that doesn’t have to be your story for the next 30 years.

30 years is a very long time to feel miserable.

And since we all have only 1 life to live - do you really want to spend the best years of your life in misery?

I don’t think so.

So here’s how you can start:

✅ Understand what you value from your career

What are you trying to optimise for at this stage?

Is it:
Money?
Prestige?
Impact?
Some combination of the above?

✅ Figure out what excites you. What topics are you naturally curious about?

If there’s nothing you’re naturally drawn to, here’s my hack: Pay attention to what you read for fun, the type of podcasts you listen to, and social media accounts that you tend to follow.

✅ Can’t figure it out on your own? Talk to people around you.

They can help uncover blind spots, especially when it comes to identifying your strengths.

Family, friends, mentors etc. - engage everyone around you to build a holistic 360 view of who you are

✅ Expand your circle

If you’re constantly surrounded by people who don’t want more from their careers, who are comfortable with feeling meh day in and day out in exchange for the money…

Then you’ll take this as the status quo.

And settle for a career that pays the bills but sucks your soul.

So here’s my challenge to you:

Expand your circle.

Start exposing yourself to the stories and possibilities of an alternative way of living and working.

If this is too hard, start by listening to people’s stories on podcasts

I created my podcast Ctrl Alt Career for this exact reason.

It's to share stories of people who left a traditional corporate job to build an alternative career for themselves.

I promise you.

Once those stories start to take root in your mind, the way you see the world will start to change.

And change - in terms of careers - will still be scary, but not feel so impossible.

It might even be worth the risk.

Because if you took the leap, you might just find the job that was always meant for you.
