I have a love/hate relationship with BlackRock.

On one hand, BlackRock gave me the very best of everything:

✅ Professional growth opportunities
✅ 6-figure salary in my early 20s
✅ Opportunities to work in Hong Kong, New York and London
✅ The best and brightest colleagues (we’d always hang out after work)
✅ Fantastic work/life balance
✅ Respect (as a VP of BlackRock)

But it also fed a void in me.

A void that I tried to ignore for 7 years.

A niggling feeling that I was an imposter.

That this wasn’t the right fit for me.

I tried to compensate by:

🚨 Asking for a change in job scope (which I got!);

🚨 Switching office locations (which I also got!); and

🚨 Launching a passion project in the form of a fashion blog (which I did).

But it still wasn’t enough.

The feeling of anxiety and dread grew.

The work didn’t get easier and I felt as though life was slipping past me.

And I thought: Is this all there is to life?

Eventually, I quit.

Joined a fashion startup and helped launch their Hong Kong office.

Joined an accelerator to try to launch a VC-backed startup (decided it wasn’t for me for now).

And then became my own boss, helping high-flying people find a job that is perfect for them.

*

Looking back, I’ve realised that I overthought a lot of things.

Constantly making pros and cons lists, asking people for advice, projecting different scenarios in my head

And what I’ve learned is that it’s often way worse in my head

And the idea of quitting was more terrifying than quitting itself.

But now that I’ve done it - multiple times! - I only wish that I’d done it sooner.

There are plenty of opportunities when you leave the “conventional” path.

You just have to take that first step.

And open yourself up to whatever might come your way.

P/S: Quitting and transitioning into a new job (especially in a new industry) is a long and terrifying process. You can’t expect to get it right immediately, but there are systems and methods you can use to speed up that process.

And 1:1 coaching too. 😉
