Confession: I’ve never had prior experience in any jobs I’ve ever had.
I jumped into my first job learning to use SQL and wrote in Perl script.
Before that, I had no idea what a database was, no idea what coding was.
In my second job, I was selling mutual funds in the Asian equity space.
Before that, I didn’t know a lot about investing in Asian equities or stocks.
In my third job, I worked in Business Development at a fashion startup.
Before that, I had no experience in startups, fashion, or Business Development.
So how did I land these jobs without any “relevant” experiences?
Here are 3 foolproof tips I use:
(1) Bring your personality to the table
- It’s not going to take you all the way, but it can take you farther than you’d think
- Your ability to be warm, approachable, and collaborative can help you seal the deal
- People at the end of the day want to hire people they want to work with
- And most importantly, don’t underestimate the power of your hunger, drive and passion
(2) Showcase soft skills like critical thinking, ability to learn quickly and present arguments in a cohesive manner.
- Can you show your employer that you’re a sharp thinker with strong reasoning skills?
- Are you an articulate presenter?
- That you’re able to learn quickly on the job?
- Your ability to do this positions you as high-potential talent, irrespective of the industry you came from
(3) Think about problems the company might be facing AND have creative solutions prepared
- Showcase your ability to think creatively and come up with outside-of-the-box solutions to problems the company is facing
- Even if they don’t ask questions relating to this, you can bring suggestions up in the Q&A section
- This gives you an opportunity to shine, presenting you as a creative, thoughtful, and sincere problem-solver.
