Being a BlackRock VP opened many doors for me.

But it also destroyed me.

The pros are obvious:

🔥 The pay

I was earning 6-figures in my early 20s!

🔥 The career opportunities

E.g. I worked in New York, Hong Kong & London over a period of 7 years.

🔥 The prestige & respect

Everyone around me was impressed when they knew where I worked at.

🔥 The trust

Because of the “BlackRock” name, total strangers believed that I had the Midas touch. Anything I did, I would excel in. Especially in finance.

Yet it wasn’t enough.

I started off in an analytics role at BlackRock, which didn’t play to my strengths. And it destroyed my self-confidence.

Then I tried again by switching to a sales role & moving to Hong Kong!

It got better temporarily (the honeymoon period!) but the misery soon returned. And soon, it became unbearable.

Even when I was promoted to Vice President at BlackRock.

It took me 7 years to leave BlackRock behind.

To let go of the ego, the secret shame, and the need to “appear” successful.

I won’t lie - having the BlackRock name on my CV continues to help me. A lot.

It has given me credibility & a way to stand out.

But I also know that it was time to move on when I did.

I had learned everything I needed to do and it was time to work on something I really cared about.

And that is how I became a career coach.

Helping people at J&J, Bytedance, BCG leave behind their fancy, high paying job to find a dream career that they want to be doing for the rest of their lives.

Does this resonate?
