👋🏻 I’m Jennifer. A former BlackRock VP who once feared becoming a piano teacher.

Let me explain.

*

I grew up in Hong Kong.

My parents taught me the importance of education and convinced me that an economics major from Columbia University was far more valuable than an art history degree.

So I did just that.

And later became a VP at BlackRock, working out of its Hong Kong, New York and London offices.

Those 7 years were the most painful years of my life because I realised that prestigious & pay didn’t guarantee fulfilment.

So I took a 50% pay cut to work at a fashion startup, helped to launch its Hong Kong office & even gave some media features!

During that time, I started to help people find their dream careers. Many of my acquaintances knew of my story and wanted to know how I’d “done it”.

Every success story with my early coaching clients brought me joy, but also deep fear.

Because I thought - is this it? Is this my calling?

I didn’t want to run a tiny, unprestigious business. To be like one of those piano teachers who run little classes on the side but will never “make it” in the corporate world (an arrogant view, I know).

At the time, many people kept telling me that I could do so much with BlackRock on my CV.

“You should fundraise. Build your own VC-backed company!”

And I really tried.

I even joined an accelerator, found a co-founder & poured all my energy into building a vitamin startup - even though I don’t even take vitamins.

You can see how lost I was.

But I was like a horse with blinders on.

Build. Fundraise. Glory. Exit.

Then one day, I woke up.

I realised that I was wasting my time working on something I didn’t care at all, and that I was back to Square 1: Chasing after glory & prestige just as I once had at BlackRock.

More importantly, I realised this: Quitting wasn’t a sin.

It was hard, but I left the accelerator before the programme even ended.

I knew I had to be true to myself.

And give my real dream a chance to live: To help others find their true passions and build a career that’s perfect for them.

At the end of the day, that is all that matters.

Our world has equipped us with all the technology & knowledge we need to make our job work for us.

It’s high time we tapped into that.
