“Well, no job is perfect” was my excuse every time I wanted to quit my job at BlackRock.
For 7 years.
Despite
❌ Not being interested in finance
❌ Dreaming of pursuing my passion for fashion and entrepreneurship
❌ Having the Sunday blues every week
I told myself that I was being ungrateful and that I just needed to get used to it.
I tried them all.
I moved to work in London and New York.
I switched teams.
I tried focusing on finding joy in my side hustles instead.
But none of it worked.
Until I realised that while BlackRock gave me a lot, it also prevented me from pursuing what I really wanted.
And I’m not just talking about passion vs pay.
I’m going deeper than that. I’m talking about what I value in a career.
We all talk about what we value in a lifestyle, a relationship, and even in the country we live in.
Why don’t we talk enough about career values?
My values included
✅ Purpose that was larger than me or my passions
✅ The ability to build something I found meaningful from scratch
✅ Potential to scale up without being limited by rank or professional level
✅ Flexibility and the freedom to do what I want, when I want
BlackRock didn’t tick any of that – which was why I was miserable.
Not because I’m ungrateful or confused.
Once I knew what those values were, things became much clearer to me.
And it was much easier to step away from the golden handcuffs of BlackRock
Because I knew what I wanted to pursue.
And it brought me to here and now, as a career coach working on fulfilling and maximising other people’s potential.
So if you’re wondering how to figure out your own values, contact me “VALUES” and my team and I will get you started.
I’ve figured out the values of many high-achievers from companies like Vanguard, The Straits Times, Microsoft and more.
I’d love to help you too.
