Unpopular Truth: You can land job offers without any “relevant prior experience”.
And here’s 3 ways how (+ how I did it):
1️⃣ Build a portfolio
While working at BlackRock, I wanted to join the fashion world.
But selling Asian fundamental equities is very different from setting up clothing warehouses and figuring out how to get pay for a monthly fashion rental subscription
Thankfully, I had the fashion blog.
I could prove that I had actual interest in the industry.
And that allowed me to get my foot in the door to work at the Netflix of Fashion.
2️⃣ Be prepared
If you really want something, work for it.
That applies even when job hunting and going for interviews.
So prepare.
Go into interviews and show not only that you’ve not only done your research, but that you have put yourself in their shoes and are thinking about their business as an “owner” too.
3️⃣ Stand out!
We all have unique experiences & skills.
Leverage on those to stand out!
During my interview at the fashion startup, I knew the founder had more knowledge than I did in the fashion world.
So I shifted the focus, discussing how the business could expand if it was in the electronics business, the kind of rental to go into and how the unit economics would work.
And that is how I got my foot in the door.
