I’ve worked with 100+ professionals on successful career transitions, and here are 6 key insights:

1. ‘Hiring freeze’ is a myth.
Great companies are always looking for great talent, no matter what they say.

The hiring process is also a two-way street: You want a company that you feel stretches you, gives you fulfilment and also properly compensates you.

At the same time, the company wants great talent that will bring them to the next level.

So while officially, the company might not be actively looking to hire, they’ll likely change their tune when a great talent walks in.

That’s what happened with a client of mine. She met the manager of an MNC who’d warned her that they were in a hiring freeze but loved her so much during their first chat that they ended up creating a new position just for her!

2. Dramatics pivots aren’t that hard
Don’t let the narrative of not having prior experience stop you from pivoting.

Instead, learn to create relevant experiences for yourself

This can come in the form of LinkedIn posts, a Medium blog, a podcast, Github, TikTok, etc.

For example, if you’re passionate and want to pivot into fashion, you likely are already consuming a ton of knowledge about the industry in your free time.

All you have to do is start sharing your knowledge.

3.  Mindset is important
A successful career pivot starts with the right mindset. Scepticism and guarantees don’t mix with personal growth.

For a lot of us, we need to see results before we believe in the outcome.

But the most successful people are those who will believe first and then see the results.

This leads me to the next point…

4. Visualisation is key
If you can visualize it, it’ll eventually be your reality.

Visualize your desired outcome regularly.

Write down detailed descriptions of your ideal future and align your actions as if you are already living it.

This approach is popular among elite athletes for a reason— because it works!

5. Jobs applications are not a numbers game
Rather than applying en masse, tailor your applications. 10 solid applications that come with strong referrals beats 100 generic applications.

A focused approach trumps volume every time.

And it’s so much less work!

6 . Mentors are a numbers game
Be selective when applying to jobs, but hustle hard to build your network.

Because at the end of the day, people hire people.

And a referral carries infinitely more weight than a sheet of resume.

If they like you enough, they will find a way to hire you.

So keep reaching out to your potential mentors—perseverance pays off! 😉

In short, anyone can pivot successfully in their career.

But it won’t happen overnight.

It requires effort, dedication, a strategic approach and…

Maybe a little bit of help? 😉
