Is this you? 👇🏻
“I can’t possibly change careers” because:
❌ I’ve already spent a decade in this industry
❌ I’ll have to take a drastic pay cut
❌ I’ll have to start from the bottom all over again
❌ I’ll have to go back to school
Even if they’re true, did you know that they also function as limiting beliefs?
The kind that will stop you from becoming the person that you are meant to be, building and living the kind of life that you deserve?
The scary thing is that often, we don’t even realise that we’re being caged in by these limiting beliefs.
Until it’s too late.
But it doesn’t always have to be this way.
Here’s how you can tackle your limiting beliefs -
1️⃣ Start by identifying your fears and the (maybe unconscious) narratives you’ve created that are holding you back
2️⃣ Understand why/where those limiting beliefs come from
3️⃣ Now play devil’s advocate and argue for the opposing side - why would someone NOT believe this?
4️⃣ And now, reframe them into affirmations
Let’s take one as an example.
E.g.
Limiting Belief: If I quit my job, I’ll have to start from ground zero.
Why I believe this: It’s a completely new industry. I have zero knowledge, zero contacts and zero capabilities. I’ll have to put in a lot of extra work to start building up my base of knowledge and skills before I reach the kind of stability that I enjoy in my current job/industry.
Why this isn’t true:
(i) Every job has transferable skills
It’s all about identifying the commonalities between my current role and the role that I want to take. I will also be able to bring a different perspective and unique experiences to the table that others who have only worked in one industry won’t have.
(ii) So much of what we do is learned on the job.
I started from zero for my current job once, I know I can do it again. The only constant in life is change. I should be choosing to grow proactively rather than be forced to grow (if I’m laid off one day).
(iii) Short-term pain, long-term gain.
Taking a temporary step back might propel my career 2 step forward and open up doors that never would have been available had I stayed in my existing role.
Affirmation:
(i) My transferable skills and experience in a different industry/role are exactly what makes me uniquely hireable
(ii) I started from zero for my current job once and managed to climb to my current level of expertise - I know I can do it again.
(iii) I am playing the long game with my career - taking a step back temporarily might be what’s needed to propel my career to new heights.
Do you see how powerful this affirmation exercise can be? It’s all a part of you building a winning mindset.
