I used to work for free.
Blame it on imposter syndrome.
When I was just starting as a career coach I had no confidence in myself.
I didn’t have the certification nor the 10 years of experience that every other coach seemed to have, so I was afraid to charge.
But not charging, of course, meant I didn’t have a business.
And coaching was nothing more than a glorified school project.
And my main goal was to test drive if I could be an entrepreneur.
I knew I couldn’t keep doing free work!
So I hired a really expensive business coach, and the first terrifying thing that she made me do was to start charging at least 4-figures for a multi-month long 1:1 program.
I’ll never forget what she told me:
“If you charge anything less, people will always nickel and dime you. So know your worth.”
It was mind-blowing for me back then to charge 4 figures (!!) because the max I was thinking of was selling a course for maybe $500.
But in retrospect, it all makes sense because:
🔸 Low fees will attract low-quality clients who will bring you more headaches than they’re worth.
E.g. When I first launched my group coaching cohort, I offered a steep discount (of <$1000 for a 6-month program).
The offer attracted interest but I discovered that people just weren’t motivated to put in the work.
Other priorities always intruded and I ended up spending a lot of time trying to motivate them to even show up and care about making a career pivot for themselves.
🔸 High fees let you expand your business and attract high-quality clients who are serious about showing up and doing the work.
Work that once done, will give rise to results and glowing testimonials that will attract even more high-quality clients to you!
This is what I’m experiencing now, where all my clients are driven to show up no matter what & do the work (why won’t you if you have paid a significant sum for a coaching program?).
And as you can tell, I now have a very different perspective when it comes to fees.
I no longer work for free.
Instead, I charge what my services are worth. After all, it attracts the kind of clients that I am most suited to serve and most importantly, are most driven to make a change in their careers because career pivoting isn’t easy.
And it’s a two-way street.
If you aren’t as committed (if not more) as I am to making a change, then nothing will ever move.
So you’ve got to be willing to show up and invest - in time, effort and finance (just as I had with my business coach).
