I just turned 33 and I’ve had a number of people come up to me to ask, incredulously, “Why would you reveal your age?!”

Which, if you’re in Asia, is quite an understandable thing to ask.

In Asia, we don’t share our age.

At all.

At some point during our childhood where we proudly declare that “I am 5 years old today!” to graduating from university, we started to feel the ticking hand of time.

And the persistent thought of how “I’m getting so old!!”.

Which, upon reflection, is a strange thing to struggle with.

Because growing old isn’t bad.

It’s definitely not something to be ashamed about!

But somehow, society has made it something that we feel we need to hide.

Which is a total lie.

I’m 33 now and given that I’m well into my 30s, I can tell you this:

Life.

Gets.

Better.

You’ve been through the “trial by fire” of your 20s - the confusion, chasing of dreams that weren’t yours, and the making of mistakes that you were too naive to know any better.

And now in your 30s, you get to incorporate those lessons and live the life that you truly want.

On your own terms.

There is no reason why you shouldn’t be proud of who you are and what your age is.

It suggests maturity.

Growth.

Experience.

But if you feel as though you’ve been stuck in a rut even as you enter your 30s (or 40s!), then maybe that is a sign to rethink what you’re doing with your life. To ask yourself these questions:

❓ What truly lights you up?
❓ What do people say when they think of you?
❓ Is this the kind of work that you want to be remembered for?

Age is just a number.

But your life isn’t.

So use the new year as an excuse to grab the bull by the horn and be brave.

Make that big career change that you’ve been thinking about.

Announce to the world so that you can’t go back on your own promises!

And if you need help making that career pivot, let me know.

I’m a career coach who specialises in helping high-performing professionals pivot from their “perfect on paper” job to a career that is “perfect for them”.

Let’s not waste another year of your life, shall we? 😉
