Here’s why I left my dream job.
When I was in StyleTheory, I was happy.
I was finally doing something that I was passionate about!
It was miles better than my role in finance and I truly loved what I did day-to-day.
And so I often get asked this question - why did you ever leave your dream job?
Well here’s why -
(1) I over-optimized for passion
While passion is amazing, it wasn’t all I value in a career.
I also value financial stability, personal and professional growth, and purpose.
All these were difficult to find in my “dream job” at StyleTheory, so I had to look elsewhere
(2) My career values changed
Passion used to be my #1 value.
This was especially true when I was desperate to do something I didn't feel so miserable about while I was in banking and finance.
But over time… As I changed, so did my lifestyle, passion wasn’t #1 anymore.
Instead, it was purpose, impact, financial upside, and autonomy.
They’re very different from when I just started in StyleTheory – and that’s 100% okay.
Because we all change. So how could our values stay the same too?
(3) StyleTheory was my test drive to entrepreneurship
StyleTheory had always been my “business school” – a means for me to learn how to run a business.
I’ve always been intrigued by entrepreneurship but I wasn’t sure if I was cut out for it.
I also knew that 9 out of 10 businesses fail within the first year. I wanted to increase my chances of success by learning from someone.
So I created my own business school, apprenticing for a real-life startup to learn the ropes.
