Every JD will tell you that you need “prior experience” to apply for a new job, but that’s a lie.

You just need to learn how to package and sell yourself to the right audience.

Here are my 3 hot tips on how you can do it:

1️⃣ Build A Portfolio

If you’re interested in fashion, start a fashion blog (like I did!).

If you’re interested in business development, then start a podcast that’s focused on the product and ingredients. Don’t give just generic information; the more niche and valuable your content, the greater your likelihood of success.

If you’d like to be a marketer, then create a marketing campaign for a company that you’d love to work for!

You can do this by creating and submitting a marketing audit - what the company is currently doing, what its gaps are and how you would improve.

Don’t say that you’re interested in something.

Prove it - even if it is just as a side project.

2️⃣ Repackage your skills and experience

On the surface, a financial analyst would have no ability to take on a product manager role in Big Tech.

In fact, most people would give up at this point and think that they could never break into another industry without prior experience but… here’s a truth bomb: There is a way.

And that requires taking a hard look at what you’ve done and the skills/experience that can be extrapolated from your past.

The next step would be to look at the job description and really understand what the job entails - specifically, what skills do they require that are universal?

Once you understand what the other job requires, repackage your past experiences to highlight your transferable skills.

Most companies are open to candidates who don’t have all of the hard skills required; you can learn on the job.

It’s the soft transferable skills - teamwork, critical thinking etc. - that truly matter.

And if you can showcase those in a way that aligns with the industry that you’re targeting (don’t forget to use their industry-specific terms!), then you stand a chance of getting a foot in those doors.

3️⃣ Cultivate Warm Leads

Always, always try to go into a job interview with a warm referral.

The job market is so competitive these days and you need every edge you can get.

No one will read a cold resume, especially if it doesn’t have obvious relevance to the job at hand, so a pair of friendly eyes within the company will boost your chances of success!

Need help figuring out how to re-package and pitch yourself?
