3 career pivot mistakes I made that I never want you to

1️⃣ Overly focusing on passion at the expense of other values

For most (especially at the start of your career), we optimize for a high-paying job with a ton of great benefits.

Passion is secondary (or maybe even not a factor to be considered).

I was the same.

Until I hit a breaking point, left BlackRock and took an 80% pay cut to follow my passion in fashion!

But that proved to be a big mistake.

I thought that if I optimised on passion (as opposed to pay), all my issues would be resolved.

But it did not.

Instead, I realized that it was two sides of the same coin.

I was equally unhappy in my previous position where I was 100% pay and 0% passion.

Now I was 100% for passion and 0% pay.

When in reality, I valued both.

So in short, don’t be fooled into thinking that passion is the only thing that matters.

And find the right ratio of pay and passion for yourself.

2️⃣ Thinking this is as good as it gets

I thought BlackRock was the pinnacle.

I’d never earn as much if I ever left this exclusive world of finance.

But guess what?

That is patently untrue.

I’m sure that Younger Me (from 10 years ago) would never have imagined that I’d now be earning so much more than I ever would in a corporate job, but I am.

Running a business is risky. But your pay truly is based on performance rather than what HR deems to be your salary band.

3️⃣ Blindly implementing advice > listening to myself

When you’re unsure about your career, it’s easy to seek advice

But not all advice should be treated equally

If you don’t want the career/life they have, take their advice with a grain of salt.

Instead, learn to magnify your own inner voice

And have confidence that you know yourself best

Because at the end of the day, no one will have your best interest at heart more than… you.

So lean into that.
